Jerry Lee Killen

October 27, 1939 — May 19, 2020

Jerry came back to the table with yet another heaping plate of crab legs. When he finished it off, he pushed back from the table and said, “Well, I’m done.” A few minutes later, he returned from the buffet with another plate of food. Someone said, “Jerry, I thought you were done?” He responded, “I am done… with the crab legs!”
Jerry always knew how to really enjoy a moment, whether it was a plate of his favorite seafood or a Bloody Mary, walking his dogs, or a day on the lake fishing with his family. He taught each of his nieces and nephews how to fish – it was always his job to put the worm on the hook, clean the fish, and untangle the lines. Jerry was always game for anything and known for taking the kids on the big roller coasters. He was also a major sports fan, from watching his nieces’ and nephews’ games to being a lifelong Denver Broncos fan. He was a Utah football season ticket holder and loved to tailgate before kickoff.
Jerry was born in Telluride, Colorado to Harley and Dorothy Coats Killen. He grew up in the small mountain town and then enlisted in the Army where he served for three years. When he returned to Colorado, Jerry married Leona Mundee on June 9, 1962, and the two have been sharing life’s adventures ever since. They spent years traveling the country in their fifth wheel trailer with their dogs, in-laws Phyllis and Charles, and many friends, including the Ute Salt Shakers.
Jerry passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at The Lodge at Riverton assisted living facility from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. It was the end of a storied life that included multiple close calls. In 1964, he was buried in a mine near Telluride and survived thanks to a coworker digging him out. Fifteen years later, after moving to Salt Lake City, he survived a massive heart attack at just 39 years old.
He is survived by Leona and their dogs, Sadie and Daisey; sisters-in-law Phyllis Mundee, Sharon (Adolph) Ortiz, and Monica (Art) Leonard; nephew Mike (Karie) Mundee, niece Vickie (Ken) Thomas, and Sonny Hoffman; and many more beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Merleen, brother Dick, nephews, and nieces.
Special thanks to Alex, a dear friend and neighbor, as well as Elevation Hospice, Sarah and Archie for your kindness.
