Jerry Cook

Jerry C “JC” Cook, 78, passed away from complications following a routine surgery on April 11, 2021 in St. George, Utah. He had spent his final days reuniting with his siblings and their spouses, who he loved so dearly. He was born June 23, 1942 in Boise, Idaho to Ross and Katie Cook. He married Sandra Mae Bleyl on September 4, 1965. He met mom on Sunday, and got engaged to her on Tuesday – of the same week.
 
JC was the oldest of six siblings and was raised in a loving home with kind parents. He grew up in the Nampa and Caldwell, Idaho areas and graduated from Caldwell High School as a National Merit Scholar in 1958. Later, he served in the United States Air Force as a Titan II ICBM Missile Crew Commander. He was an Eagle Scout, and he graduated from Brigham Young University in Communications. By profession, he worked for many years as a Systems Analyst at EDS, where he worked personally for Ross Perot, and later he was employed by United and Continental Airlines. He loved technology, gadgets, and Amazon Prime.
 
JC had many hobbies and interests. For many years, he was an avid racquetball player and he loved to ski. He was a linguist, becoming proficient in German and Spanish, and dabbling in Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Hindi, and any other language spoken by the many who he befriended throughout his life. He enjoyed being creative in the kitchen, learning to bake and cook anything from breads to desserts to experimental Sunday dinners.
 
He was an amazing storyteller, the master of the Dad Joke, an extraordinary amateur magician, and the all-around life of the party. He had a way of immediately making people feel loved and appreciated, and his constant optimism was infectious.
 
JC had a love for the Gospel and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ permeated his life. He served diligently in the church as a temple worker, Gospel Doctrine teacher, seminary teacher, Bishop, musician, and counselor to a dozen other Bishops. As a young man, he served in the Great Lakes Mission and later served a mission with his sweetheart Sandi in the Germany, Berlin Mission. His understanding of the blessings he had received from the Lord motivated him to generously share with others who were in need, including welcoming several dozens of individuals into his home over the years. He also opened his home to foreign exchange students from time to time.
 
As a musician, he learned to play several instruments: piano, guitar, accordion, banjo, and upright bass. He gave a senior recital on the full chest of recorders. Recently, he was making plans to learn to play the oboe. For fourteen years, he conducted the Colorado Mormon Chorale, where he had the opportunity to perform at Mt. Rushmore and Carnegie Hall. As a composer and arranger, he produced dozens of hymn settings, penned several of his own inspirational texts, and even composed family songs that are now beloved by multiple generations.
 
He is survived by his loving wife Sandi of fifty-five years; daughters Cynthia (BJ) Sollars, Heather (Kevin) Tanner, and Monica (Richard) Gillespie; sons Alan (Jasmine), Scott, Jeff (Keeley), and Brian (Kayla); grandchildren Suzy (Spencer) Llewelyn, Charles Jeffrey “CJ” Sollars, David Sollars, Jordan Sollars, Samuel Sollars, Zakery Sollars, Maerik Sollars, Dalton (Hannah) Tanner, Ethan Tanner, Landon Tanner, Mason Tanner, Camille Tanner, Devin (Angelina) Gillespie, Jessica (Alex) Raffensperger, McKayla (Ryan) Calvert, Joshua Gillespie, Maxine Miser, Carmine Pullen, Carina Cook, Babe, Lego, David Cook, Nathan Cook, Jonah C Cook, and Benjamin Cook; great-grandchildren Adaline Raffensperger, Camilla Raffensperger, Audrianna Raffensperger, Raelynn Gillespie, Madison Calvert, Maddex Llewelyn, Kyler Llewelyn; sisters Mary (Steve) Bartlett, Karen (Richard) Anderson; brothers Stan (Mary) Cook and Roger (Monica) Cook; and many nieces and nephews (each one being his favorite!) who loved and adored their Uncle JC.  He is preceded in death by his oldest son David, his parents Ross and Katie (“had a baby…”), grandchild Sariah Sollars, sister Ina Lee Herbert, and brother-in-law Frank Herbert.
 
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at the Denver, Colorado LDS Stake Center at 2710 South Monaco Parkway, Denver, Colorado, 80222. A viewing will be held from 9–9:45 am prior to the services. Please wear a mask and social distance if attending the services. Interment will be at the Littleton City Cemetery following the services.
