Jeanne Marse

February 1, 1931 — August 8, 2022

Jeanne Toshiko Marse passed away on August 8, 2022, surrounded by her family.
She was born on February 1, 1931 in Fukuoka, Japan to Fukujiro Matsueda and Satsuno Nakamura. Jeanne should be known as a survivor. She shared many stories with her family about growing up in Japan during World War II.
She moved to the United States after getting married. She knew very little English and left all of her family behind. Jeanne worked hard her entire life; she often said she was an independent woman, and she was proud of that. One of her accomplishments was opening a cafe in Copperton during the Kennecott era. After that her hard work led to her opening an import store named after her, Toshiko. After Jeanne closed her business she continued to participate in various festivals as a vendor. She will be missed by the numerous patrons who loved to visit with her.
Jeanne was very involved in the Japanese Church of Christ in Salt Lake City, Utah. She loved to cook and was very picky about making the right mochi and sushi. Jeanne was also a master doll-maker and Japanese traditions can be seen in her numerous dolls. She was also adept at making beautiful kimonos and was unable to finish the last one she was working on. Jeanne loved to travel, of course her favorite place was Japan; sometimes going twice a year. In addition to loving her family she loved her dogs; they were like her children and she is now reunited with them.
She is preceded in death by both parents, and her brother Akihisa. Jeanne is survived by 3 brothers and 2 sisters, her son David Marse (Evelyn) and her daughter Sarah Shepard (Mattson). Her family includes 9 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at Memorial Redwood Mortuary at 6500 S Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah; on Sunday, August 14, 2022 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. followed by a private family graveside service.
