Jeanie Nyuk Len Mahelona Smith

September 6, 1932 — June 13, 2018

Jeanie Nyuk Len Mahelona Smith, age 85, passed away peacefully on June 13 2018, and returned to her loving husband George Ronald Smith. She was surrounded by family at her passing.
She was born September 6, 1932 in Kahului, Hawaii to loving parents Daniel Napela Mahelona, and Violet K.Y. Pung. Her father was a foreman for a sugar cane factory and her mother sewed leis and taught piano lessons when she was not at home raising her children. Jeanie was the eleventh of fifteen children, and many exciting memories of her adventures with her siblings were told to her family.
Jeanie met her sweetheart George Ronald Smith and fell instantly in love. After only two weeks of dating, he proposed. Three months later on July 5, 1952 they married in the Waikiki LDS Tabernacle. This union brought four daughters into their home. On September 6, 1967 they blessed their marriage and sealed their family together in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity.
Visits from her grandchildren were her greatest delight and she loved laughing when the family was together. Jeanie enjoyed taking care of her family and her love of cooking continues today with her daughters.
Jeanie loved to dance hula and her father taught her and her sisters to dance for the USO troops. She would dance at our school and church functions. She taught her daughters and some of the neighbors how to hula dance. Mom’s brother Garner would come to Utah to see us dance, and found out we did not have Tahitian skirts. So Dad, Mom and Garner bought raffia for 25 cents for 1 bundle, and eighty dollars later we had a Tahitian skirt. Nani and Shauna continued dancing after high school and danced at The Polynesian and The Ming restaurants.  She was an avid reader and visited the library weekly checking out an armful of books. Jeanie retired at Mountain Bell Telephone Company where she worked in accounting.
She loved trips to Wendover and Las Vegas, she was always lucky. Her last trip was with daughter Shauna and friend Patty Kendall, where she had a blast and told them she felt like a school girl again.
Jeanie Smith is survived by her four daughters, Haunani Lopez, Lynnette Smith (Teri Ortega), Luana (Charles) Canfield, Shauna Smith (John Turner), and also her brothers Herbert and Charles, and sister Pearl-Moana, and five grandchildren, Kimberly (Justin), Brion (Jenna), Ashley (Ryan), Olivia, Nicolas (Josephine) and two great-grandchildren Kailani and Kekoa.
She is preceded in death brothers William, Daniel, Nathaniel, Aaron, Arnold and Garner, and sisters Rose Annie, Miriam, Shirley, Irma, and Darlene.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks for the loving treatment that Jeanie received during her stay at Highland Cove from their staff and especially from Veronica Madrid.  Words cannot express the gratitude for the love shown by Holly Fox and the staff at Millcreek/Signature Home Health and Hospice. For the past two years they gave our mom the care she deserved.
