The University of Utah suffered a great loss last Thursday.

 Jay Douglas Thompson, perhaps their biggest football fan, passed away on February 20,2025 in his home surrounded by his family. Doug was born on February 9, 1941 to Jay George Thompson and Elizabeth Hall. He was married to Penelope Erekson, later divorced. Married to Linda Gilliland, later divorced. Married to Virginia Vizina, later divorced. He graduated from Jordan High School and worked in the summer chopping sugar beets. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah. Doug enjoyed the land, air, and sea! He was an avid snow skier, played tennis, enjoyed the mountains, and enjoyed hiking and nature. He earned his pilot's license and was a skydiver. He loved to swim, boat, water ski and scuba dive. His favorite places were Bear Lake and Puerto Vallarta. He was very social and loved to connect with anyone he met. He served in the Coast Guard and was a residential real estate broker for many years. He enjoyed reading a book a week, traveling the world, appreciating art, and also took an interest in politics, especially helping in local government. He loved his daughters and especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughters, Susan(Scott Lloyd) and Shannon(Steve) Smith,his sixteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, sisters Kathy Thompson, Lori Bowcutt, and Nancy Maughan. Preceded in death by his parents and his daughters, Stephanie Tracy and Jennifer Lyn Thompson.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 1, at 8100 S Top of the World Drive at 11am. There will be a viewing from 9-11 am prior to the services. Interment at the Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 E 7800 S Cottonwood Heights. If you would like to honor him, you could wear some sort of red the day of his funeral! Go UTES!!
