Jay Hazelgren

October 21, 1932 — February 9, 2021

Jay passed away at home surrounded by family. His cause of death was incident to age.
Jay was born October 1932 to John and Pearl Hazelgren in Murray, Utah, where he lived his entire life. He met his wife Marge while they both attended Granite High School. They remained sweethearts for 70 years. They were married in November 1952. Jay served in the Military in the Navy. He did 2 tours of duty on the LSMR409 Naval ship in the Korean conflict. In January 1956, he honorably finished his military service. Marge and their newborn daughter Sherie welcomed him home. Linda and Brian were soon welcomed to the family. Jay cherished family and his time spent with them. Marge and Jay were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1960.
Athletics were a big part of his life. Jay played first base on his softball team ‘West Construction’ entering in regions many times, nationals, and a World Tournament. As an avid BYU fan, he started going to BYU basketball games with good friends. They became season ticket holders with BYU football, when Brian played, and for many years after. Even when homebound, he always watched BYU sports.
Jay was a hard worker. His employment took him on adventures. He helped design the Salt Palace, in Salt Lake City, UT. Along with many other structures in the Salt Lake Valley. He owned and operated ‘Money’s Ice Cream’ in Murray, UT. Property manager at Spring Meadows Apartments, a family run business. However, Jay found his calling in life at Wasatch Shadows Nursery. He worked there for 25 years as their Rosarian. He loved to help people find the perfect rose, making customers for life.
He participated as a member of multiple Murray City Commissions. Including, The Planning and Zoning Commission and The Murray City Shade and Tree Commission. Jay was honored with a planted tree in his name at Murray Park for his contribution to the community.
Jay and Marge served as Spiritual Care Representatives for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Intermountain Healthcare. Faith and service were important to Jay. He taught his family by example.
Survived by: His wife Marge, daughter Sherie Christensen (Steve), daughter Linda Burtoft (Fred), and son Brian Hazelgren (Ann), brother Richard, 15 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, sisters Edie Walters (Don) and Jeanne Mackie.
The family would like to thank the many friends and neighbors who helped take care of Jay, as well as Hospice Homecare at Intermountain Health Care. We know he will always be with us. Remember to “Stop and smell the roses”.
In lieu of flowers, in Jay’s honor, a donation can be made to govetsfoundation.org. The viewing will be held from 10:30 to 11:45 AM at Riverside Ward, 5200 Glendon Street, Murray, Utah. The services will follow from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Interment to immediately follow the service at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah.
