Jay E Nelson

d. December 31, 2021

Jay E. Nelson passed away December 31st, 2021 unexpectedly at the age of 86. He was a great Dad and Grandpa. He was a kind and caring man with a quiet sense of humor. Jay and his twin sister Janice were born on April 17th, 1935, in Lynndyl, Utah to Charles F. and Orpha L. Nelson. Jay’s older brother, Elroy, shared a birthday with the twins so we often heard stories of the shared birthday. Jay was married to Kathleen Jean Cassity on June 9th, 1960. They were married for 62 years and had two children, Leslie and Jenny. Jay was by Kathleen’s side til she passed away in May 2021.
Jay served honorably in the army. He attended the University of Utah and was part of the Sigma Pi fraternity. He worked for the state of Utah, workforce services as a Systems Analyst until he retired.
Jay was known as a friend and neighbor who was always there to give a hand, shovel driveways and check in on his friends in the neighborhood. He was always available at the drop of a hat to help with repairs for his family and friends, whether electrical, mechanical, yard work and carpentry. Kathleen once described Jay as a man who had just about everything and could fix most anything.
Jay was a kind, funny, caring and fair man, and a wonderful grandpa to his three grandkids, Catesby, Colter, and Sabine. He enjoyed being a part of their lives. He had just attended two swim meets for Colter and an ice skating competition for Sabine. He enjoyed dining out at the restaurant that Catesby is managing. He always expressed how proud he was of each one of them.
Jay enjoyed being outside. He spent many years hunting and fishing as well as being an accomplished waterskier and snow skier. He spent many summers at family property in Manila where he worked to keep it available for everyone to enjoy. Jay and Kathleen genuinely enjoyed being in Manila as well as spending time in St. George, golfing, and relaxing with family and friends.
Jay is survived by his daughters Leslie Kovach (Dan) and Jenny Jennings (Glenn) and three grandchildren; Catesby and Colther Carman and Sabine Jennings. Jay was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen, brother Elroy Nelson, sister Janice Nelson, and mother and father Orpha and Charles Nelson.
