Jarrell “Jake” Donald Colby
January 3, 1939 — May 21, 2017
Our loving brother, uncle and friend age 78, passed away peacefully and returned home to his Father in Heaven on Sunday, May 21, 2017. He was born on January 3, 1939 in Ogden Utah to Donald Bryant Colby and Benita Barber Colby. Jarrell was diagnosed with mild mental retardation and psychotic disorder. For the past many years, he has been living at Hillcrest Care Center.
While living at Hillcrest Care Center, Jarrell worked at South Valley where he recycled books and did shrink wrap for Stampin Up. In 2010 Jarrell started working at Lifeskills where he continued recycling books. In 2015 Jarrell retired.
Jarrell loved to play cops and robbers, and collect all types of watches, badges, horses, cap guns or anything western. He particularly enjoyed being the sheriff and wearing a sheriff badge. He enjoyed riding his bike and entertaining people with his Jimmy Stewart imitation. He loved having Don take him to get his hair cut, and loved eating cheese burgers at McDonald’s. Although he was disabled he enjoyed life and had a fun personality. You couldn’t help but laugh and smile when you were around him.
Jarrell is survived by his two sisters, Bonnie Arlene Hecker (Gene) and Eva Joyce Miller (Don, deceased) and many extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Benita Colby; sister, Kaylene Colby (still-born); brother-in-law, Donald Lee Miller; and a nephew, Ronald Colby Davis.
Our family is grateful for the enduring legacy which Jarrell leaves including overcoming many hardships and challenges in his life. We take comfort knowing that he is reunited with so many who love and cherish him.
The family would like to offer a very special thanks to the staff of Hillcrest Care Center who helped care for him and for their kindness, love and compassion they showed towards him.
A graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday May 25, 2017 at Memorial Mountain View, 3115 East 7800 South (Bengal Blvd), Cottonwood Heights, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 10 a.m.to 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the same location, Memorial Mountain View.Service Information
