Jane Levis Sauerbier Dawson, beloved mother and grandmother, quietly passed away following a brief illness on Thursday, February 26, 2015. She was born and raised in Virginia City, Montana and was the third of five children born to Karl and Eva Sauerbier. She graduated from Virginia City High School and Butte Business School. She worked at the Montana Standard until her marriage to her partner of 66 years, Harmel A. Dawson, in 1946. She was heart-broken in 2013 when he proceeded her in death.
Jane took great pride in her skills as a homemaker and mother. Her always immaculate home was warm and welcoming to all. With the 10 to 12 dozen cookies that she made almost every week, she made sure that there were always fresh treats for the lunches she packed for her family. Holidays in her home were celebrated with baked goods and homemade candies. Jane was a founding member of the Wasatch-Salt Lake Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America. She created many works of beautiful needle-art during her lifetime. These treasured legacies are part of the décor of many family homes. Her love of needlework continued to the last weeks of her life as she crocheted many hot pads, far exceeding her goal to make one for each of the staff members at Sunrise of Holladay Senior Living Center where she resided and received loving care during the last two years of her life. She also enjoyed collecting stamps, spending many hours sorting and preserving all types of stamps. In her later years, it didn’t matter if the stamps were valuable or bulk rate. She carefully tore them from their envelope to be saved.
Jane will be forever remembered as a caring mother and for the loving devotion she had for her family: daughter Eva and son-in-law Dave Hoagland; son Karl and daughter-in-law Peggy Dawson; son John and daughter-in-law Susan Dawson; daughter Sally Dawson and son-in-law David Dee and grandchildren Paul Hoagland, Sean Dawson and Sarah Dee.
A memorial reception will be held on Tuesday, March 3rd at the Sunrise of Holladay Senior Living Center from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at 4650 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City for friends and family wishing to share their memories of Jane.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the “Harmel A. ‘Bull’ Dawson & Jane Sauerbier Dawson Endowment”, that has been established in honor and memory of Harmel & Jane at Montana Tech (Montana School of Mines). Contributions can be made to the Montana Tech Foundation at 1300 West Park St., Butte, Montana 59701 or on-line at https://foundation.mtech.edu/give/.
