James Ray Kilpatrick, Sr.

September 12, 1942 — March 5, 2019

James Ray Kilpatrick, Sr., Age 76, passed away on March 5, 2019, in Layton, Utah, due to complications of Pneumonia and COPD. He was born on September 12, 1942 in Boise, Idaho to Raymond and Gwendolyn Volner Kilpatrick. He was the oldest of six children and lived much of his childhood in Moses Lake, Washington. Jim enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17, proudly serving during the Vietnam Era as a rifleman stationed in Subic Bay, Phillipines.
Jim became a long-haul truck driver, but it was in his hometown of Moses Lake, where he met and later married his great love, Bonnie “Sandy” Wise, on November 22, 1972. Jim and his family eventually settled in Bountiful, Utah, where in the nearby Wasatch Mountains, he loved to hunt, fish, and enjoy nature.  As empty nesters, Jim and Sandy began a new adventure and moved to Graford, Texas, where they remained for many years.
Jim was fast friends with everyone he met. He loved watching Fox News and visiting with friends to debate the news of the day; he loved socializing and was the life of the party. He was an avid collector of guns, knives and patriotic memorabilia, and would always put on his best hat and boots for any occasion as he was a cowboy at heart. He was the consummate salesman, involved with many types of sales including real estate and cars, but he always returned to the open road. After driving truck for many years, he retired to care for his sweet wife following a car accident that left her disabled; later visiting her daily at the nursing home in both Texas, and after they returned home to family in Utah. Jim loved his wife and family very much and remained closely connected with his brothers and sister throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; children, Kori (Alex) Castillo, Scott (Kim) Kilpatrick, Karol (Dave) Jensen,  Jimmy Kilpatrick (Sandra), all of Utah, and David Werttemberger (Jodi), Austin, Texas. He is also survived by three children from a previous marriage, James M. Kilpatrick, Steven Kilpatrick and Sandy Ohnemus; siblings, Janet Stolz, Roger Kilpatrick, both of Moses Lake; Jess Kilpatrick, Ephrata, WA; Stan (Nancy) Kilpatrick, Boise, Idaho; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Robert Lee Kilpatrick.
Jim was an organ donor, gifting his eyes that others may benefit from research to preserve sight. We are grateful for his service, for his life and his love. We want to thank all those who provided such thoughtful care and support from Intermountain Layton Clinic, Rocky Mountain Care Clearfield, and McKay Dee Hospital over the past several months, and the many doctors, nurses and staff at Davis Hospital who worked so hard on his behalf and showed our family such care. He will be greatly missed by all those who know and love him.
Funeral services for Jim will be held on March 19, 2019 in the Kaysville Smith Lane Ward, 1449 South Thoroughbred Way, Kaysville, Utah, at 12:00 PM.
