James Nelson

August 4, 1947 — April 2, 2021

James Walter Nelson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 4, 1947. He was the fourth child of Ernest D. Nelson and Belva Jarrell Nelson. Jim was a hard worker. His first job was as a custodian for the Granite School District. After that he worked for American Linen for almost 40 years. Jim got up early in all kinds of weather and took the bus to work. He made many friends there and retired in 2012.
Jim enjoyed playing baseball on the Church team and was a catcher, but Jim really loved hockey! He was a loyal fan of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles and maintained this loyalty when the team changed to the Utah Grizzlies. He had season tickets with his mother and brothers for many years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad and his brothers. He liked the outdoors and started going to the Mountain Man Rendezvous at Fort Bridger, and other locations. Jim looked great in his buckskin pants and wolf skin hat! He liked to participate in the rifle shooting competitions and he liked visiting all the trading booths so he could add to his collection of mountain man gear. Many of the rendezvous were a family affair and Jim enjoyed watching his nieces and nephews playing frontier games. And he liked sleeping on the ground in a tent.
Jim had the opportunity to travel with his various family members. He went to Hawaii, Tahiti, Mexico, and Canada. In addition to lots of Utah destinations, he also went to Florida, New Mexico, Kansas, Washington, D.C., Palmyra and Nauvoo. His most recent trip was to Memphis, Tennessee – well, actually he just wanted to see Graceland – Jim was a huge Elvis fan and he was happy to get to see all the Elvis memorabilia.
He enjoyed going out to his favorite Mexican restaurants, watching TV, working Sudoku puzzles, and he had a mean chess game.
Jim was talkative – he spent time talking to his neighbors and people on his street and at the Senior Center. His Church job was to greet the members at the door and hand out the program for the meeting, and he loved that. He was happy to share his opinions and his beliefs. He was a dedicated home teacher and he enjoyed attending the temple. He was an amiable companion, brother, uncle, and friend.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Belva Nelson, brothers Craig and Mark, and his sister, Karen Weaver. He is survived by his oldest brother, Robert (Nancy), and Barry (Carla), and 11 nieces and nephews.
