James (Jim) Doyle Nunley, September 3, 1934 – February 5, 2017, passed away from kidney failure at home surrounded by family. He survived stage 4 colon/liver cancer and had been cancer free for nine years; doctors said he was a miracle man. Jim was born on the kitchen table at home in Salt Lake City, UT to Doyle Layton and Lo Dema Heaps Nunley. Raised on a farm in Union, Utah, he was proud to be a Jordan High School Beetdigger. He served in the USAF in April 1956 – 1960 stationed at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, NM attached to the 509th Bombwing. He owned and operated Nunley Painting, loved to travel and fish. He went back to Granite Peaks Adult Education after 53 years to earn his High School Diploma at age 72. His son James, Jr. graduated with him. He was proud to be a grandson of Hyrum & Jerusha Barden Smith. James married Mary Verma Ray on June 23, 1962, later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on September 16, 1981. Jim & Mary served a four year LDS Mission at Canyon Creek Assisted Living Center; he also loved his calling as ward greeter. Jim is survived by his loving wife Mary, children Tracy (Ray) Walters, Lori Greene (Johnny Hernandez), Wendy (Chet) Robinson, James, Jr. (Kymberli) Nunley, Leslie (Shayne) Lewton; 18 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; sisters, Joyce (Derek) Partridge, Alma (William) Jamison, Phyllis Buckland, Kathie Jo Nunley; brother, Rick (Sandra) Nunley; Special cousin Lynn (Donna) Nunley, many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Dorothy Anderson. A special thank you to the VA Hospital and IHC Hospice for the loving care they gave Jim. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Midvalley 1st Ward, 1050 East Chapel Hill Dr., Midvale, UT. Visitation will be Friday evening 6:00 till 8:00 pm at the Memorial Lake Hills Mortuary, 10055 South State St., Sandy, UT and from 10:00 am till 10:45 am Saturday at the Church.
