Jack Howard Parry died Sep. 1, 2017 at age 91, returning to his Heavenly Father and the loving arms of his sweetheart Nola Afton Maughan. Jack was born Nov 2, 1925, in Los Angeles, the youngest of 9 children of Dan Josiah Parry and Clara May Hennefer. Jack lived his life in a way pleasing to God, family and neighbor and will be welcomed into paradise with open arms. Jack has longed to be with Nola the last 11 years since her passing.
He was a life-long devoted member of the LDS church and served in many callings including a mission (Eastern States), a Bishop for 11 years, a high counselor and high priest group leader several times. He served a couples’ mission with Nola in Seaside, Oregon. Following his mission, he was released by Apostle Ezra Taft Benson who told him a girl was waiting for him at BYU and that he would know her when he saw her. When he saw her she glowed. He married Nola Sep 6, 1949. Five children were born to this union.
Jack served in the Navy during WWII where he miraculously received his testimony of the church. He participated in the liberation of the Philippines and was instrumental in saving the USS Denver from sinking.
Jack has always been talented in individual sports. As a boy he won awards for YoYo, horseshoes, Jai alai, and ping pong which enriched his depression childhood. As an adult he enjoyed handball, racquetball and tennis. In his declining years he scored an amazing 364 perfect games at Wii bowling at Olympus Ranch where he found his last wonderful home. Jack practiced optometry in Price, UT where they had 20 happy years. They moved to the SLC area where they lived in Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, and Taylorsville. In SLC he practiced with son David specializing in Orthokeratology, improving vision using contact lenses, and helped many people achieve their goals of jobs that require good uncorrected vision.
Jack is survived by his children: David (Joyce); Linda Switzer (Bill); Barbara Watson (David); James; and Grant (Hollie) and by 26 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sep. 6, 10:00 viewing, 11:00 funeral at the Revere branch chapel, 981 E Revere Cir. (5500 S), SLC, followed by interment at Memorial Estates–Mountain View, 3115 E Bengal Blvd (7800 S.)Service Information
