1932 – 2017
Our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Jack Elza Higgins passed away peacefully on Friday, December 1st, 2017 at his home. Born January 30, 1932 to Charles Benjamin Higgins and Myrtle Armina Fuller in Ogden, Utah. He attended East High School and later attended the University of Utah. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Korean War. He married Jerree Ann Sproul and together they had three sons and then later divorced. He married Beverly Blank West and would have been celebrating their 50th anniversary on Monday, December 4th, 2017.
He was a champion trap shooter, winning many awards and trophies for his shooting skills. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He spent many happy years in his and Beverly’s second home in Manilla, Utah, where they enjoyed the outdoors. They also loved spending time with their friends and family there. He was a Salt Lake county deputy sheriff for 28 years and was part of the K-9 group for much of his career. He loved his dog Albert and gave many demonstrations to the public. He made many friends who remained close to him throughout his life.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Beverly and his parents. He is survived by three sons, Charles (Lisa), Terry, Reese, four step-daughters, Lynda (Mike), Patti (Ed), Bonnie (Issie), DeeDee (Craig), his 22 grandchildren, and 38 great-grandchildren. His dog-children over the last 50 years were Albert, Liza, Mandy, Mindy, Misty, Molly, Meggie and now Millie.
A funeral service will be held December 6th, 2017 at 11:00 am at Mountain View Memorial Mortuary, 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights, UT, 84121, with an hour prior viewing at 10:00 am. Interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Mortuary. There will also be a viewing Tuesday, December 5th, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm also at Mountain View Memorial Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Shriners Children’s Hospital.
The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the caregivers at Cornerstone Hospice, especially Meggan, who was not only Jack’s nurse, but also became a support for all of the family.Service Information
