Jack Burton

Jack L. Burton, 82, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014 from complications of multiple myeloma and diabetes, a disease he fought for over 30 years. He was born in Pueblo Colorado, March 15, 1932 to Martha Metcalf and Jack Burton. He grew up in Park City, Utah and graduated from Park City High School in 1950. Jack was guided through his high school years by his grandmother Mary Metcalf. Growing up, Jack made many lifelong friends in Park City. He entered the U.S. Air Force June 1950 and served his country for 3 ½ years. After being honorably discharged, he enrolled at Westminster College where he received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education.
While at Westminster, Jack met the love of his life Mary Chipian. They married in 1961 and had four children together. Jack and Mary started their married life together in Manila, Utah were they were school teachers. Jack taught for over 30 years in the Daggett and Salt Lake School Districts. He taught History, Special Education, Drivers Ed and coached Basketball. Jack was a tireless advocate for students with disabilities. During the summers, for 30 plus years, Jack worked for the U.S. Forest Service and made many friends there.
Jack is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Chipian Burton and their four children, Patrick (Lonny) Burton, Jason (Terri) Burton, Chris (Holly†) Burton, and Katherine (George) Manousakis, and eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 11:00 am at St Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84108. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm with prayer service at 7pm at Deseret Mortuary, 36 East 700 South, Salt Lake City.
