After a short but courageous battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Irene Valle Barrus was called home to our Heavenly Father on March 7, 2014 at the age of 67.
“The only way to take sorrow from death is to take love from life”
She was Born March 1, 1947 to Thomas and Blanche Valle in Salt Lake City, Utah. Irene graduated from Highland High School. She attended the University of Utah where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, graduating with a degree in elementary education. She taught school for four years.
She married Gary Barrus on December 13, 1968 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have four children; Jennifer (Nielsen), Matthew (Michelle), Elizabeth (David Bridge), and Amanda (Robert Robinson).
She spent most of her adult life in the Cottonwood Heights area where she served her community and church in many capacities. She maintained friendships with a several groups of women who enriched her life. She spent three years serving as a volunteer for the Salt Lake juvenile detention center. Through this calling she gained a deep understanding of the atonement of Jesus Christ and had great compassion for the challenges of the youth in today’s world.
Irene enjoyed boating, golfing, and LOVED football. She and Gary especially enjoyed U of U athletics. Everyone who knew Irene knows she was a die hard Ute Fan. Her annual New Year’s resolution was to try and dislike BYU a little less.
Irene’s greatest accomplishments are her children and 14 grandchildren. They adored her. Alexandra, Hailey, Jacob (Nielsen), Thomas, Caroline, Jonathan (Barrus), Grace, Hannah, Oliver, Emmaline, Charlotte (Bridge), Ellie, Annabelle, and Henry (Robinson). They are her legacy.
Irene lost her mother to cancer 45 years ago and missed her every day. She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas A. and Blanche Richards Valle and survived by her brother Thomas R. Valle (Marilyn).
The family wishes to thank the staff at the LDS hospital leukemia ward and Rocky Mountain Hospice. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the U of U Alumni Association or the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund.
