Ida Tetsuko Shimizu Tateoka

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend Ida Tateoka passed away on October 16, 2016. Born to Toru and Sai Shimizu in Weston, Idaho on December 12, 1923, Ida spent most of her growing up years in Los Angeles, California. Because of World War II, Ida’s family moved to Springville, Utah where she finished high school. Ida completed her nursing degree at the University of Utah and worked at St. Marks and Cottonwood Hospitals. Ida married Matt Mateo Tateoka on January 16, 1953 and resided in South Jordan, Utah for over forty years.
While living in Los Angeles, Ida began figure skating. She continued skating at Hygeia Iceland located in Sugarhouse, Utah where she helped with the newly formed Utah Figure Skating Club. Ida served in many leadership positions in both the Utah Figure Skating and United States Figure Skating Associations. Ida began judging figure skating in 1953 and became a national, international and world figure skating judge. She judged the figure skating competitions in the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia in 1984. She judged numerous world and international competitions. She also judged national and international Special Olympic games. Ida was instrumental in bringing the 2002 Winter Olympic Games to Salt Lake City by representing the state of Utah at the Olympic announcement ceremony in Budapest, Hungary.
Ida joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1975.
She is survived by brothers Jim (Peggy) Shimizu, M. Tom (Junko) Shimizu; son Reid (Shauna) Tateoka, daughter Doree Ann Tateoka, grandchildren Jacob (Michell) Tateoka, Elizabeth Tateoka, and John Tateoka. Ida is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Hiroshi and Bill Shimizu, and sister Helen Oniki.
Services will be held on Monday, October 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the L.D.S. Cottonwood 4th Ward, 5565 South Neighbor Lane, Salt Lake City 84117. Viewings will be held Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Monday, October 24, 2016 from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m., also at the Cottonwood 4th Ward.
