Ida Kay Mcdonald

Kay McDonald, age 79, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2018 in Draper, Utah. Kay died peacefully after a thirty-three year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.  Kay was born on May 18, 1939 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Kay married Robert Merrill McDonald on December 18, 1961 and they later divorced.  Kay graduated from East High school in 1957.  She attended the University of Utah and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.  Kay was affiliated with the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.  Kay taught in the Granite School District for eleven years.  She taught Home Economics, and later returned to University of Utah for an additional certification in Special Education.  Kay had a soft heart and took many people into her home over the years who needed help.  She enjoyed volunteering at Camp Kostopulos and helping children with Cerebral Palsy.  Kay loved gardening, astrology, reading, bingo, shopping, and listening to talk radio.  Kay was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1985.  She faced each day with courage, and an upbeat attitude.  Kay is survived by her daughters, Melissa (McDonald) Mendez, Melinda (McDonald) Eastman.  Her sons in law, Frank Mendez, and Roger Eastman.  Her Four grandchildren, Sarah Mendez, Emma Eastman, Zachary Mendez, and Katie Eastman.  Her siblings, Shirley Kilbourne (Stan Kilbourne), and Pauline Phillips.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ira C. Thomas and Lyle Bonner Thomas. Her brother, Ira William Thomas, sister in law, Afton Thomas, and brother in law, Edward Phillips.  Our family would like to express deep appreciation to The Draper Rehabilitation and Care Center for their exceptional love and care.  A viewing will be held on Monday, July 30th, at 10:00 AM at the Memorial Mountain View, 3115 East 7800 South in Cottonwood Heights.  A graveside service will follow at 11:00 AM.
