Hildegard Kate Knorrek, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2021, in Sandy, Utah, at the age of 86. One of eight children, she was born in Elbing, Germany to Paul Robert and Ida Scherwinski. The entire family immigrated to the United States in 1953, arriving in Salt Lake City on July 4th. They were delighted to watch fireworks to celebrate their arrival. She met her future husband, Helmut Knorrek, at evening English classes and the two were married on September 10, 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, baking, and attending the temple. She loved spending time playing with and reading to her grandchildren. Her favorite game was Scrabble—and she liked using both English and German words. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served for many years as secretary of the Primary and also Relief Society.
She is survived by her four children, Steven (Becky), Karen (Steven), Linda (Michael) and Jennifer (Brian), 19 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Helmut; her parents; and siblings, Rita and Harald.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary & Cemetery, 3115 Bengal Blvd. (7800 South), Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121. A viewing will be held from 9:00–10:45 a.m. with the funeral at 11 a.m. Masks are encouraged.
