Herbert Rice Davis

February 29, 1928 — September 8, 2020

Herbert Rice Davis passed away on September 8, 2020, at the age of 92.  He was born on February 29, 1928, in St. Anthony, Idaho, to Ethelyn Carolyn Rice and Lew Wallace Davis.  His parents opted to assign his birthday as February 28, so he could have a birthday every year but we enjoyed honoring him every Leap Year as well. He was the youngest of four children and the only son. As a youth, he loved all sports, his dogs, and going to the movies.  He graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1946 where he excelled in football and boxing.  He was a Golden Gloves champion.   His desire was to serve his country in the armed forces but a childhood injury prevented him from doing so.  Nevertheless, he was an avid supporter of all branches of the military and a proud American.  He loved and was well versed in history, particularly the events of WWII.
He married his eternal sweetheart, Ruth Maxine Norris on June 27, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple.   They were a wonderful example to their children and grandchildren of devotion and love through the many years they were together.  He spent his adult life working as a farmer in Wilford, Idaho and then in insurance sales.  He also spent time as a deputy on the St. Anthony Police Force and as a Justice of the Peace.  Later in his life, he found his true calling in the funeral business, working for Memorial Mortuaries & Cemeteries for many years.  He loved meeting people, assisting with viewings and funerals, and driving the limousine. He knew every cemetery in the state.
He earned the rank of Eagle Scout while serving as a Scoutmaster, and was very proud of that accomplishment.  He served his community as a member of Rotary International and as a coach in youth baseball and football.  He was instrumental in starting Little League Baseball in Wilford and youth football in St. Anthony and was a frequent community and school district activity volunteer.  After moving to Salt Lake in 1969, he coached youth football for many years for Hillcrest, Skyline and Highland.  An avid fan of BYU sports, he was a season football ticket holder for many years, until age and bad knees kept him from climbing the stairs to his seats.  He loved to travel and enjoyed several trips to Hawaii, as well as Caribbean, Mexican and Alaskan cruises, and many road trips around the country.  He loved movies – especially movies about war and war heroes and Westerns, and he accumulated a large collection of all his favorites.
He was loved by everyone who met him.  As soon as you knew him, he was a friend for life.  He was generous to a fault and had a kind and gentle nature.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Margery Browning, Donna Scoville, and Betty Tibbitts.  He is survived by his wife of 73 years, his children Lynette Davis, Larry (Shanna) Davis and SuAnn McFadden, 7 grandchildren, Justin (Tarra) McFadden, Zac (Brook) Davis, Josh (Rachel) McFadden, Carly (Tyler) Simpson, Berni Jo (Adam) Davis, Megan (Kelly) Zierse, and Tyson (Melinda) McFadden, 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who knew him lovingly as ‘Uncle Herbie.’  His family was the crown of his life and he made sure they knew how much he loved them!  We are rejoicing knowing that he is free from the bonds of his earthly body and enjoying a reunion with the many loved ones that welcomed him.  His family wishes to thank those who cared for him so professionally and compassionately:  the technicians and staff from Oquirrh Dialysis, who affectionately called him ‘Lolo’; the doctor, nurses and staff at The Wellington Assisted Living Facility; and the wonderful caregivers with Brio Hospice who cared for him in his last days.
