Helen Lavar Moffitt

April 2, 1933 — February 2, 2022

Uintah basin native Helen LaVar Miller Sprouse Anderson Moffitt, passed away on February 2, 2022 at the age of eighty-eight after a decades-long battle with multiple sclerosis and living a long and full life serving the Lord. While raising five children, she taught Gospel Doctrine for the LDS church for many years and then served a full-time mission in Bacolod, Philippines with her late husband—and the love of her life—LaMarr C. Moffitt. She also spent many years doing genealogy, which she published in the form of two large tomes documenting the history of the Greer line.
Once a legal secretary who excelled at shorthand, typing and business, LaVar served on the Chandler, Arizona city council for two years. She maintained her interest in politics, was always neat and organized and believed in being a good manager of any assets entrusted to her. Having been raised on a ranch with many boys (brothers as well as uncles), she had a fierce personality and would never back down from a fight, but that strength served her well when she faced the many challenges that arose in her life.
LaVar enjoyed simple pleasures—a delicious banana-nut muffin, the great band era songs to which she would dance when she was younger, the old-time movies, a drive “up the canyon,” and the opportunity to talk about her faith. She is survived by four of her five children and eighteen grandchildren, as well as three living stepchildren and twenty-two step-grandchildren from her late husband. Those who loved her will always remember her many financial sacrifices, the lessons she found imperative to living a good life and the delicious meals she cooked. No one could bake a better German-chocolate cake!
