“Onto the 19th Hole”
Harvey Wayne Shafer (81), passed away peacefully at his home in Murray, UT while surrounded by his family on November 20th, 2017, ending a 3 year battle with Multiple Myeloma.
Harvey (aka, HaHa) was born September 29th, 1936 to Harry Alvin Shafer and Helen Elizabeth Ray in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended Granite High School and was an accomplished all-around athlete. He married his lifelong sweetheart, LaRee Shafer (Peterson) ; they went-on to build an amazing family in Murray, Utah.
Harvey served in the United States Marine Corps as active infantry from 1954 to 1962, then he devoted his career as a Lineman and Working Foreman for Utah Power & Light, where he retired in 2002. Prior to, he worked as a lineman at Murray City Power.
Besides his family, HaHa’s true passion was golf; his life revolved around the love for the game, which was reflected in his several accomplishments and wins. Oftentimes he could be found on the driving range, giving lessons to an unsuspecting complete stranger. He enjoyed playing with anyone, and built a second family on the course. His known goal as life went-on was to continue to shoot his age (or better), which started when he was sixty-six years old.
HaHa loved to travel with his family in his motorhome and boat, spending many weekends at places such as Bear Lake, or anywhere with a surrounding golf course. He was a proud little-league football coach for his boys, and had a significant impact on their lives as well as many other young lives.
Harvey is survived by his loving wife, LaRee, his twin-sons Kevin Shafer and Kelly (Kim) Shafer, son Brent (Fawn) Shafer, his grandchildren Brad (Amanda) Shafer, Tiffany (Loren) Shafer, Tobi (Leo) Paulos, Kortney ( Blair) Little, Brandon Shafer, Blake Shafer, Eric Shafer, Steven (Ivy) Shafer, and his 8 great-grandkids. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all at the Utah Cancer Center, their care and compassion to Harvey was a truely appreciated gift to him and his family. The family also thanks the gang at Mick Riley Golf Course, their acceptance kept “old blue” fighting and enjoying his passion.
