Harris Axle Bradshaw

March 18, 1919 — May 23, 2016

Harris Axle Bradshaw was born 18 March 1919 to Bernard Briggs Bradshaw and Ingaborg Loda Harris near Magrath, Alberta, Canada. Harris was the second child of eight children. His parents and all but one of his siblings, Warren, preceded him in death. His wife, Arlene, and three of his daughters also preceded him in death.

Harris lived in Canada until he was age five, when his family moved to Lehi, Utah.  Harris graduated from Lehi High School, then attended Brigham Young Academy for one quarter.  He joined the Lehi National Guard and then the Lehi 222nd Artillery Battery.
While Harris was living in San Francisco awaiting his orders to go to Hawaii, Pearl Harbor was attacked. Because Harris was in the service and there was war on U.S. soil, he received the American Defense Service Medal, which has been issued only one other time so far: the 9/11 attacks. The army sent Harris to Fort Lewis, Washington, for training. He didn’t like the cold weather in Fort Lewis, however, so he took an offer to go to jump school in Georgia, where the weather was warm. Harris was then sent to the European–African-Middle Eastern Campaign of WWII, where he traveled throughout Africa, Italy, and Germany. Along the way he gathered and kept many Stars and Stripes newspapers.  He received the Bronze Star at the Battle of the Bulge, serving in the 456th Parachute field artillery battalion, which was attached to the 101st.  When the war ended, Harris was still a Canadian citizen. To be released from the military, he had to obtain his U.S citizenship. He was naturalized in Germany in July of 1945, then returned home on a ship. He received an honorable discharge in September 1945 at Fort Douglas, Utah.
Harris met his bride, Arlene Thelma Mulcock, at American Savings and Loan in Salt Lake City, where she worked as a secretary. They were married 23 February 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. Harris and Arlene had six children: Joseph (Susan), Marlene, Terry, Randy (George), Leann (Daryl), and Virginia (Casey). They had seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Harris loved fishing, going to Flaming Gorge, and spending time at Aunt Annie’s cabin with his family and friends. He and Arlene traveled the world together with family, mostly with Arlene’s twin brother, Warren. Harris loved to read, especially the morning newspapers and his collection of National Geographic magazines. He could always be counted upon to have a pocketknife available for any need, and he thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to ride his three-wheeled bicycle after he could no longer drive a car. He particularly enjoyed sounding his bicycle horn to startle unsuspecting drivers and pedestrians.
Harris had several jobs during his married life, but the job he enjoyed most was his salvage business, which he ran from two warehouses he built and owned. He loved to sort things, like nuts and bolts, and he was very good at it.
Over the years, Harris had many accidents from which he always recovered. For that reason, his family and friends said that he was like a cat with nine lives. His favorite comments during a conversation were “Just right”; “Come see, come saw”; and “C’est la guerre” (“It can’t be helped.”).
As a family, we would like to thank the Alpha Home and Hospice team, particularly Dad’s nurses: Debra, Bonnie, and Linda. We would also like to Cottonwood Memorial Mortuary for its services.
