Harold Schreiber

June 8, 1929 — February 4, 2018

Harold Walter Schreiber – RETURNED HOME WITH HONOR to his Heavenly Father, his earthy parents and to the love of his life, Alona. Born in Chemnitz, Saxony, Germany. Harold’s life was connected to God before he was born; and he followed his Savior through service to his fellow man his entire life. Harold was named after a missionary who influenced his mother. Harold went on to dedicate his life to his Savior.
Shortly after the war ended, Harold served a mission in the newly formed communist East Germany, his assignment to serve was just 90 miles from his home. A missionary in 1948 under communism was not allowed food rations, and Harold and his companions would suffer hardships most missionaries would never imagine. One time during his mission Harold and his companion lived on only onions for several weeks.
After his mission Harold and Alona Schreiter were soon married. Then without a word to anyone they loved, they hired a guide to sneak them across the border into West Germany, leaving everything they knew and everyone they loved behind. If caught, that act of love, which was directed to their posterity, could have cost them both their lives. That faith filled journey across the border that separated East and West symbolized the love and devotion they had toward each other, their future children, and to our Heavenly Father, and it would be become the foundation for the rest of their lives.
Once in West Germany their journey was just beginning. Their desire was to live with the saints in Salt Lake City Utah, to be sealed in the Temple of our God, and to raise their family in the church.
After their journey to America and on to Utah, Harold built a successful painting business and went to work serving wherever he was asked. Harold served as Bishop twice, Stake President, Mission President over the Germany Hamburg Mission, and then as a stake Patriarch.
Harold was preceded in death by his sweetheart Alona and survived by his children; Frank & (Jessica), Frank’s sons, Joshua (Katie) and Charles (Lauren), Julie Zubal and her daughters, Jackie (Derek Cowart), and Lindsey, Michelle & (Phillip Berry), their children, Phillip Jr (Heidi), Kristen (Josh Mendenhall), Erica (Tony Rassavong), & Marcus (Brenna), David & (Allison), their sons Nicholas and Carson, Paul & (Allison) and their daughters, Joelle & Klaira. In total, Harold left behind 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and some 200 plus missionaries that served in the Hamburg Germany mission from 1979 to 1982, whom Harold considered part of his family.
