Harold Eric Waldhouse 1926 ~ 2022
Harold Eric Waldhouse age 96, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on August 23rd 2022. Harold was born June 2, 1926, in San Francisco California to Erick Rudolph Waldhouse and Lydia Marie Magdalena Hilgendorff. His family moved to Salt Lake City when he was 8 years old. He graduated from South High and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving 2 years as a radar Technician until the end of W.W. II. On returning home he enrolled at the University of Utah where he was active in Lambda Delta Sigma and the Intercollegiate Knights Association. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1950. While at the University of Utah, he met the love of his life, Maylene Cummings. They were married June 19, 1952, in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple, a marriage they treasured for 70 years. Harold earned a master’s degree in Science Education from the University of Utah, and spent 37 years teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. During the last 14 years before retiring, Harold taught at Indian Hills School where his students in his science classes nicknamed him ‘Mr. Molecule’. Harold had a passion for learning and teaching, told fabulous stories, and had a great sense of humor.
Harold loved the mountains and pine trees. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, and hiking the mountain trails with his family and friends. He took many vacations with his family, which were spent traveling the U.S. and camping in the National Forests along the way. In the winter, he continued outdoor adventures with many snowmobile trips. He also enjoyed bowling every week with the Salt Lake Teachers Bowling League. He was a ‘Jack of all Trades.’ He used his
skills to repair cars, improve his home, and build the family mountain cabin from the ground up with the help of his son Steve and other family members. A devoted husband, a kind and loving father and grandfather, he was always available and willing to help everyone who came to him. He freely shared his time, talents, humor, and wonderful stories. Harold was a lot of fun.
Harold is survived by his wife Maylene C. Waldhouse; his children Susan W. Barber (Glen), Lynda W. Arcaris, and Steven H. Waldhouse; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Harold was preceded in death by his daughter Gayle W. Kefauver, his brother Gordon R. Waldhouse, and his sister Eleanor B. Waldhouse.
We wish to give thanks to Applegate Hospice and caregivers Pete, Marina, and Marycruz; and all those who cared for him.
