Harmel Arthur Dawson, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away suddenly on Saturday, September 14, 2013. He was born and raised in Butte, Montana and was the youngest of 14 children born to Edward and Annie Dawson. He graduated with a Masters Degree from Montana School of Mines in 1948. He served as an electronics instructor in the US Navy Radio School during World War II. “Bull” Dawson, as he was known to his colleagues, was a long-time and internationally recognized metallurgist. During his career he worked throughout the US and internationally for companies like the Anaconda Company, Combined Metals Reduction Company, Techmanix Corporation, Metallurgical Resources and Gallagher & Co. He was the founder and retired president of Dawson Metallurgical Laboratories and a long time member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers. In 1981, he received an honorary Mineral Processing Engineering Degree from the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology when he was recognized for his innovative contributions and outstanding service to the mining industry.
Harmel will be remembered as the loving husband and devoted friend to Jane, his surviving wife of more than 66 years. He will also be forever remembered as a dedicated and loving family man by daughter Eva and son-in-law Dave Hoagland; daughter Sally Dawson and son-in-law David Dee; son Karl and daughter-in-law Peggy Dawson; son John and daughter-in-law Susan Dawson and grandchildren Paul Hoagland, Sean Dawson and Sarah Dee. All will remember his smiling face, incredible moral character and keen wit.
A memorial reception will be held on Tuesday, September 17from 6:00-8:00 pmat the Sunrise Living Center, 4650 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City for friends and family wishing to share their memories of Harmel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Harmel Dawson to Montana Tech Foundation at 1300 West Park, Butte, Montana 59701.
