Hannah Clark Goodson passed away peacefully on February 15 at age 31 due to complications associated with acute mental illness which she had battled courageously for the last 15 years.
Hannah was born to Sarah and Talley Goodson on May 16, 1993 in Salt Lake City, Utah. During the early part of her life, she lived in Texas, South Africa, Pittsburgh and Singapore. After moving back to Salt Lake with her family in 2002, Hannah attended William Penn Elementary School, Evergreen Jr High and Olympus High School. Hannah is the oldest of 4 children and is survived by her three younger siblings John, Rebecca, and Sam.
As a young person, Hannah was bright, imaginative and energetic. Hannah loved the Fine Arts from an early age, with art and music being paramount to her life. She loved classical music, especially Mozart and Bach.
Her greatest interests were oil painting and drawing, to which she dedicated herself throughout her life. She became a very accomplished portrait painter. Hannah earned a BFA from Laguna College of Art and Design and completed most of her master’s degree from New York Academy of Art. While in New York, She was mentored by Steven Assael, a world-renowned figurative painter who described Hannah as one who truly had the “Art Spirit.”
While in New York, Hannah met Ashish Gupta, who became an important person in Hannah’s life. They spent over 5 years together, eventually moving to Salt Lake City, where they had a home. Ash, a former Google engineer, loved Hannah and the two of them together had a wonderful relationship.
Hannah was an accomplished mountain athlete, enjoying alpine skiing and mountaineering. As a young person, she loved spending Christmas skiing at the family cabin. Later, Hannah achieved several challenging mountain ascents with her dad, including Denali, the Matterhorn, the Eiger, and Ama Dablam in Nepal.
Hannah displayed a pure love and innocence which she maintained throughout her life. She was a life-long Christian and was devoted to her faith in Jesus Christ. As a young person in the LDS faith, she loved to read the Book of Mormon and loved her Valley View 6th Ward family. More recently, she was a very dedicated member of the Greek Orthodox Church, where she found a loving and supportive Christ-centered community.
Hannah’s radiant spirit was challenged by severe and complex mental illness. Despite her valiant efforts, her condition became increasingly difficult to manage. While Hannah’s painful struggles were heartbreaking to the many who loved and admired her, we take comfort in the promise that her bright light is now free to shine.
Hannah was a truly singular individual who left an indelible impact on all who were privileged to know her; her love of beauty and her generous nature brightened many lives around her. We feel immense gratitude for the time we had with Hannah and hope all will remember and treasure her unique spirit.
We are deeply appreciative of the amazing medical staff at St Marks hospital who cared for Hannah and kept her comfortable during the 5 days she spent in the hospital. We also appreciate the Donor Connect team. Hannah was a gift-giver and at the end of her life she was able to donate all of her major organs to extend the lives of others. We are deeply grateful to the Greek Orthodox Church for their love and care for Hannah.
