Gwen Marler Barney
1928 ~2013
After 85 years of vibrant living, unconditional love and constant service, Gwen Marler Barney died unexpectedly but peacefully on August 24, 2013. She leaves us an enduring legacy of her love and her faith in Jesus Christ.
Her goodly parents, Vesa Call and Ezra Lewis Marler, were raising their children Ona, Mary, Kenneth, Chet and Betty when their twins Ben and Gwen were born on January 15, 1928 in Kansas City. The Marlers then moved to Independence, Missouri, where Gwen grew up surrounded by a loving family and a close-knit community of friends.
After graduating from BYU, Gwen married Archie Dean Barney on October 13, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. For 60 years, in unity and love, they accomplished the work of life and influenced for good the lives of many, especially their children Livona and Martin (Hansen), Marcus and Heather, Jennefer and Bert (Young), Justin and Bonnie, Quintin and former wife Kathy, Colleen and Brad (Nye), Michael and Portia, Scott and Sharla; 30 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. While raising her children, and after they were grown, Gwen accomplished many things, including authoring a biography of her ancestor Anson Call and a pamphlet titled “Mormons and Their Temples”, serving in the Salt Lake Temple and in the New Zealand Aukland Mission on the Island of Niue with Dean, and volunteering with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She was also instrumental in the restoration of the Chester Call Home along with the Chesterfield Foundation, in historic Chesterfield, Idaho.
Gwen is preceded in death by her dear husband Dean; parents; siblings; and granddaughter, Alex. She was precious and beloved by her children and family, who wish to thank the neighbors, friends, and all who served her.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 31 at noon at the Stratford Ward Chapel on 2635 South 1500 East. Viewings will be held at the Stratford Ward building Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm and from 10:30 to 11:30 am Saturday prior to the service. Interment following in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
