Gus Paras

February 29, 1924 — December 9, 2015

Loving husband, father and grandfather Gus John Paras passed away on December 9th 2015 after a short illness. Gus was born on February 29, 1924 in Salt Lake City to Nick and Despain Rogaris Paras. Gus was a simple man who took pride in the fact that he “wasn’t looking to impress anyone”. He was the son of farmers and whether it was cutting meat in his grocery store, working on the roof of his buildings, or later in life cultivating produce in his garden, Gus was never a stranger to hard work. His work days were long and he was never afraid of getting his hands dirty. From an early age Gus was unquestionably tough and most likely he would have followed his passion to become a professional boxer had he not been needed on the family farm after the death of his father and when his brothers and sister left to serve in the war. In the 1940’s, Gus and his brothers Chris and John started the Paras Brothers Market on the corner of 3500 S. and Redwood Road. The market evolved into three separate family businesses that still continue today. In 1952 Gus married the love of his life, Olive Petrogeorge and they raised 3 sons, Nick G. (Kathy) Paras, Jim C. Paras (Ken Powell), and Michael J. (Lisa) Paras. For himself Gus never wanted much but was very generous with his family, charitable organizations, and individuals in need. If he had any fault it was that he worked so much, but he always seemed to enjoy his labors. Content with their love for each other, Gus and Olive didn’t indulge in many material pleasures, but they did welcome trips to Wendover where he enjoyed playing the slots and blackjack. Gus is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Chris Paras, John Paras, and sisters Ange Assuras and Christine Sprinkel. He is survived by his wife Olive, sons, and grandchildren Gus Nick Paras, and James Michael Paras. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday December 16th at 11:30 am at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 279 S. 300 W. Friends and family may call at the church to a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
