Gordon Leroy “Gordo” Engstrom

November 27, 1925 — May 11, 2018

Gordon was born November 27, 1925 in Ogden, Utah to William LeRoy Engstrom and Hazel Kemp Engstrom. Gordon passed away on May 11, 2018 at the age of 92 of causes incident to age.
Gordon graduated from Ogden High School. While there he played the trombone in the marching band. Later he attended Weber College. While there he won numerous AAU diving medals and awards.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1944 and trained as a radio operator on a B-17 Bomber known as The Flying Fortress during World War II. After his service he was honorably discharged. Soon after, he moved to Washington, D.C. and met and married Ava Belle Rogers.
In 1953 he started his career as a traveling salesman. His first job was with Nestle Chocolate. Later on he worked for Revlon, Playtex International, Wrangler Boots and Karmen Western Wear. He loved being on the road and working as a salesman. He eventually retired at the age of 71.
Gordon was an avid skier. He started skiing as a teenager at Snow Basin and skied until he was 80 years old.
In 1966, ABC’s Wide World of Sports televised the Gelande Ski Jump at Alta, Utah which he won 1st Place in the Senior Division.
Even though he fulfilled his dream of skiing the Austrian Alps, his fondest memories were at Alta, Utah on a deep powder day.
He enjoyed playing pool, especially billiards, and could shoot with the best of them. He taught many of his friends how to play and was a Friday afternoon regular at the Senior Center.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He had a long time tradition of fishing the Snake River in Idaho on Labor Day weekend.
He always had a passion for motorcycles and cars, such as his Golden Hawk Studebaker, his Old’s 442, and later on Cadillacs.
He always had a good story to tell and was usually the center of attention.
Gordon was blessed with a long life with many accomplishments and will be remembered and missed by family and friends.
Gordon is survived by daughter, Karin (Stuart) Rosenthal of Brookeville, MD, son, David (Lorrie) Engstrom of Sandy, UT and daughter, Lorraine (Anthony) Wasowicz of Santa Rosa, CA.  He is also survived by grandchildren, Adrienne Zimmerman, Danielle Rosenthal, William Rosenthal, Stephanie Evans, Jennifer Burgess, Tyler Engstrom, and 3 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ava and a brother, William Engstrom.
Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 12:00 Noon at the Memorial Holladay~Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Drive with a visitation 1 hour prior to services. Interment will be at Memorial Holladay Cemetery. Memories may be shared at www.memorialutah.com
