Gordon Cecil McGavin was born January 29, 1925 in Alamo, Nevada to E. Cecil McGavin and Harriet Parkinson and passed away from liver cancer May 14, 2022 at age 97.
After graduating from East High in 1942 he attended the University of Utah while waiting to be drafted to the war. The call came after his 18th birthday and he was assigned to be a crew member on a B-17 stationed in England. He flew 20 bombing missions over Germany and France. After the war he received a mission call to the French mission. Following his mission, he married Ella Barbara Kelsey on October 29, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Gordon worked his whole career at Hill Air Force Base. He had a passion for languages and retired as a Lt. Colonel from the linguistic corps of the Army National Guard. He had a mastery of French and Russian and studied many other languages even late in to his retirement years. He celebrated his 88th birthday in India after taking Hindi classes at the U. He spent countless hours talking to himself in a variety of different languages. His other passion was doing genealogy and temple work which he did right up to his dying day.
He is survived by his four sons: Brian, Holladay; Brent (Laura), Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Scott (Myra), South Jordan; Blair (Jean), Holladay; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grand-children. He is also survived by his brother, Carl and his sister, June. Preceded in death by his wife, Ella Barbara and his sister, Carol.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at the Holladay North Stake Center, 4395 S. Albright Drive where friends may call for viewing from 11:30 AM until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Holladay Memorial Park.Service Information
