Goldie Mecham Jones

October 29, 1933 — July 3, 2019

Goldie Mecham Jones passed away on July 3, 2019, at the age of 85. She was born October 29, 1933, in Ogden, Utah, to Arlin Lorenzo Mecham and Ada Deborah Rogers.
Goldie grew up on a dairy farm in Milton, Morgan, Utah where she learned hard work from her parents alongside her brothers Arlin, Elden and Devon who we called “Donnie”, and her sister Marilyn. As siblings they also had fun on the farm, especially in the winter when they would sled down a hill they called “The Old Slick”, and from the barn down to the road. One of the things both she and Marilyn loved to do was roller skate at Como Springs, a recreational spot in Morgan. She also loved horseback riding and other activities with her childhood best friend Ruth Clark. She enjoyed putting together puzzles with her brother Donnie after chores were done at the end of the day. This continued to be a favorite pastime throughout her life. She also enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, walking and hiking.
Goldie graduated from Morgan High School in 1951. She worked at the LDS Church Office Building in Salt Lake from 1951 – 1953, and then married Robert LeRoy Jones on June 25, 1953 in the Salt Lake City Temple. They put down roots in Taylorsville, Utah, and here enjoyed the comradery of ward members and good neighbors.
She worked at Morrison-Merrill Lumber Co. (Boise Cascade) from 1954-1963, and then at Strevell-Paterson until 1984. She worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield from 1984 until the time of her retirement.
Bob and Goldie loved to dance and took lessons at an Arthur Murray dance studio. Her favorite calling as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was teaching ballroom dancing in her ward with her husband. They trained 6 students from the ward to perform in the Dance Festival hosted at the University of Utah the last year the festival was sponsored by the church. Goldie especially loved the fox trot and the waltz.
She and Bob loved to travel and spent many vacations in various parts of the US including many of the islands of Hawaii. They enjoyed attending Salt Lake Bees baseball games, and University of Utah basketball games and gymnastics meets. After Bob’s passing, Goldie went with friends on a tour of church historical sites including Liberty, Independence, Far West, Adam Ondi Ahman, and Jamesport in Missouri; Kanesville, and Winter Quarters in Iowa, and Sydney, Nebraska.
Goldie is preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents Arlin and Ada, her brothers Arlin, Elden and Devon, brother-in-law Marvin, sister-in-law Marilyn, nieces Suzanne and Alane, one grandniece, and one great-grandnephew. She is survived by her sister Marilyn, sister-in-law Mary, 10 nieces, 5 nephews, and many grand- and great-grandnieces and grandnephews.
Goldie loved to spend time in her yard pruning her beautiful rose bushes and tending to her Euonymus plant, which she cleverly positioned to cover her gas meter, which she said was not very attractive.
We are immensely grateful to Legacy Hospice and Sunridge Assisted Living and Memory Care for all the tender care they gave Goldie throughout her stay at Sunridge, and to Memorial Redwood Mortuary.
The family will meet with friends on Saturday, July 13, from 1:00-1:30 PM, followed by a Graveside Service at 2:00 PM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah 84123.
