Glen Raymond Jones passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, at the age of 92, in Washington, Utah, surrounded by his devoted spouse and posterity.
He was born on October 15, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is the second son, one of 4 sons, and a daughter born to Raymond Silas and Julia Ann Jones. As a very young boy, the family made their home throughout the Salt Lake area, in the avenues and Sugarhouse. Times were difficult during the Depression, and the family moved frequently, but later, they settled in Price, Utah, as well as Scofield, Utah, where his dad worked in the coal mining industry. Glen knew the value of hard work and was well acquainted with the mining industry himself. From a young age, being around the coal mine was a daily routine.
He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1947-1951. He was proud of his service in the 82nd Airborne. He enlisted for 3 years but ended up staying a 4th year after the Korean War started.
He married the love of his life on June 22, 1957, in Ely, Nevada. For most of their married life, they lived in the cities of Hunter, West Valley City, Taylorsville, and West Jordan, all suburbs in the Salt Lake Valley. They raised their family of three children, having lost one infant son prematurely. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Jordan River Temple on June 22, 1991.
He was a very industrious, extremely intelligent self-starter. After honorably serving in the U.S. military, he worked at Kennecott and worked as a hod tender in the masonry industry. He recognized an opportunity to build his own business and be his own boss. As a result, he became a skilled mason and taught himself to read blueprints in order to build both residential and commercial building projects. As a business owner, he would proudly point out brick/block structures throughout the state of Utah that he had built. He was equally quick to point out poor work. He took immense pride in doing things very well.
Glen loved the outdoors and was an avid sportsman. He spent extensive time hunting and fishing, activities that were a large part of his life with family and friends. He became an avid golfer and loved to spend time on the golf course with his family and friends. Always a “Utah Man” and sports fan in general, he was a huge fan of the University of Utah athletics, where he held basketball tickets for over 40 years.
Glen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, although it was later in his life that he discovered his spiritual self. He served faithfully in several church callings and enjoyed his fellowship with church members.
Glen is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Bernadine (Bernie) Gibbs Jones of Elsinore and Washington, Utah; his children, James (Jim) Raymond and Donna Jones of Liberty, Utah; Julia Kay and Shaun Layton of Washington, Utah; Glen Troy and Sandy Jones of Richfield, Utah; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his infant son, Glen Scott Jones, and his parents, Raymond and Julia Jones.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Memorial Estates, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah. Viewing will be held at 9:00 AM, followed by funeral and graveside services beginning at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the benefit of America’s veterans by donating to the Gary Sinise Foundation online at www.garysinisefoundation.org.
