Gilbert Maestas

December 16, 1933 — November 5, 2017

West Valley City, UT –Gilbert Maestas peacefully passed away at home surrounded by loved ones, in the arms of his love.
Gilbert was born in Durango Colorado on December 16th 1933 to Aurora and Antonio Maestas. He was the 4th child out of 9. Gilbert went to Park school during his younger years where he would eventually meet the love of his life Frances Salazar, in the 3rd grade. After schooling he went on to work for Coke-A-Cola with his dad and worked there for many years. In 1950 he moved to California to live with his brother Dell and worked for American Aviation for 3 years. Gilbert returned home for a visit and that is when he decided he would start courting Frances and ended up moving back to Colorado. They dated for 6 months and Married on September 13th, 1954. They had their first son Floyd within the first year of Marriage. They moved to Salt Lake City in 1955 where he worked for various companies between Salt Lake City and Durango the next 5 years. Gilbert started working for the Denver Rio Grande Rail road and during that time they had their second son Mark. Gilbert worked for the rail road until he retired in 1992. Between their 2 sons they would have 7 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren that would become the highlight of their life. He had many hobbies that he loved but there are a few that Gilbert is known for, the first is playing his guitar. He would sing and play every chance he had. The second was fishing he loved fishing and so many loved fishing with him. Third is storytelling, he had a story for everything. The last but not least was joking with the women about how men ruled the roost when we knew the women in his life ruled him. He was such a strong man and even as things starting going against him he had a smile on face and his head held high. He recently celebrated 63 years of marriage with his beautiful wife and spent the last few months spending every minute with her doing the things that they loved.
Gilbert is survived by his wife Frances Maestas, Sister Ella Maestas, 2 sons Floyd Maestas (Barb), Mark Maestas and daughter in-law Vickie Maestas Goodro. 7 Grandchildren: Brandon Maestas, Frances (Tyler) Heaton, Matt (Leslie) Maestas, Ashley (Chris) Singer, Melissa Maestas, Jackson Maestas and Cooper Maestas. 5 Great Grandchildren: Delyla, Oliver, Madden, Claire, Savanna and his baby Tommy. He had several nieces and nephews and so many friends who he considered family.
Preceded in death by his Parents: Aurora and Antonio Maestas, his 2 brothers Tony and Dell, 5 sisters Janie, Bernie, Leslie, Bessie and Dee.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Rocky Mountain Hospice and Redwood Memorial Estates for taking such great care of the Boss and being so kind and compassionate during these hard times.
Thank you to our friends and family who have been so supportive. It means the world to us.
Viewings will be Friday, November 10th, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Saturday November 11th, 2017 from 12-1:45 pm. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm with interment to follow. All services will be held at Memorial Redwood Mortuary & Cemetery at 6500 s. Redwood Rd, West Jordan. UT.
