Geraldine Sommers Newport-Shields

Our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend passed away peacefully at her home, with her family by her side on October 11, 2016. Geraldine was born on January 23, 1930 in Bingham Canyon, Utah to Joseph William and Belle Sommers. She married the love of her life Bill Newport on July 5, 1946 in Nevada. They were married 46 years before he passed away. Geraldine was an amazing cook and everyone loved her food. She loved music, shopping, camping and anything outdoors with her family. She found peace in watching hummingbirds around the flowers in her yard. Geraldine took pride in her faith, church family, and friends but mostly her love of her Savior Jesus Christ. Geraldine could be found having lunch with her favorite ladies the “Lunch Bunch” for all their birthdays. Her greatest joy was her family and grandchildren. Geraldine is survived by her children Bill Newport Jr, Diana Collins, and Sandy Newport; 12 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great -great grandchildren; siblings Merla Kelch (Dan), Ted Sommers (Shirley), Scott Sommers (Carma), and Ned Sommers (Joyce); and many nieces and nephews. Geraldine is preceded in death by her husband bill, parents Joseph and Belle, baby son, and Son Robert Newport, as well as her brothers Joe, Don, George, and Sister Faye. She is now having a wonderful reunion with her husband and family she has been longing to see again. The family would like to thank the Horizon Hospice staff that took such great care of our mother Geraldine. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2016, 2 PM with a viewing two hours prior at Memorial Redwood Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah.
