Geraldine “Jerie” Abbott Brown

March 18, 1931 — August 31, 2018

Geraldine or “Jerie”, a nickname she chose for herself, was born to Albert Leon “Lynn” Abbott and Thresia Carn in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Jerie grew up in Murray in a home that her father built, which stands as a testament to his skill to this day. She was always very fond of her brothers, sisters and Mama and Daddy and always looked for ways to have “get-togethers” so we could all spend time together. The stories she told of growing up in her loving family of seven will continue to live on in our hearts and minds. Mom’s loved studying the Bible and was overjoyed when Jehovah’s Witnesses came to her parents door when she was 11 years. She eagerly eavesdropped as they taught her mom the Bible even though she was told to “go play”. She became a teacher to many others who remained long-time friends. Her bible study skills and informal witnessing  made her infamous in the Salt Lake Valley.
She graduated from Granite High School in 1949. Jerie’s love of interior design took her to BYU. In her later years she attended Utah Technical College where she earned her associates degree.
She married Paul Leon Brown Jr. in 1955 and had three children that she adored:  Lorin Lee, Darrell Lynn and Charyssa Ann. They divorced after 30 years of marriage but as the years went on they became best-of-friends and shared many memories and laughter together. Paul preceded her in death August 22, 2014.
Jerie worked for the Canton Restaurant as a hostess, Lennox Industries as the PX operator, accounts payable and receivables.  Many years later she worked in the office at Meadow Moor Elementary. Her greatest joy was when she was the milk lady at the school and she could interact with the children. We found our greatest job and adventure at Ken Garff Company where we spent 10 years cleaning the mechanic stalls in the Oldsmobile, Honda and Hyundai shops. Her greatest job and accomplishment was raising her three children. Mom was an amazing mother. My favorite saying was “we work together and we play together”. Mom taught us how to work hard and take pride in our accomplishments and then we would have the best times playing together. She gave us a well rounded childhood complete with swimming lessons, the love of music, theater and amazing food. Mom was strong, smart, fun and determined; which she said was her “piss and vinegar”. She loved to cook, bottle fruit (she made the most amazing bottled cherries), garden, decorate, play pinochle and drink vodka tonics. Jerie always wanted to dance the western swing to Eddie Rabbit’s “I’m Driving My Life Away”.
Jerie is survived by: her children, Lorin Lee (Jessica) of Phoenix, Arizona, their children Chase Chandler, Parker Ashby and Hudson Cy; Darrell Lynn (Brenda) of Millcreek, Utah, their daughter Caitlin Taylor; Charyssa Ann of Millcreek, Utah; step son David (Janet) of Taylorsville, Utah, their children Todd Elliot, Anthony Ted, Michael David and Cristopher Burke; her daughter by choice, Heidi (Stephen) Moyes and granddaughter Macky Monroe Moyes; her brothers Orval and Arthur Charles Abbott; nieces and nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Albert Leon “Lynn” Abbott and Thresia Carn Abbott; ex-husband Paul; step son Michael Dean; grandson Brock Huck; her brother and sisters, Norman, Beverly, Lyla, and Phyllis.
We want to thank the staff at Superior Hospice; Bev, Clair Julian, Megan and Renee for their excellent care and devotion to mom and me.
Jerie was loved by family and friends and her dazzling smile and magnetic personality will be missed dearly. She will remain in Jehovah’s memory until we meet again.
A memorial in her honor will be held on Saturday, September 29th at 4:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 203 East 5600 South. A celebration of life will follow at Murray Memorial Mortuary from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., 5850 South 900 East. Refreshments will be served.
