Gerald S. (Jerry) Thompson

Sandy, UT – Gerald S. Thompson, AKA Jerry, sweetheart, dad and grandpa, passed away May 21, 2019 at home after a heartbreaking but valiant struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on January 25, 1938 to Edward G. Thompson and Arthella Turner. He was raised in Murray by his step-dad, Darrel Bateman, whom he considered his Dad. He graduated from Murray High School.
He married Jean Miller (Robinson) in Copperton, Utah. They were one month away from celebrating their 58th anniversary. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1964.
He retired from the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office after 26 years of service; the last 22 years of which were as a homicide detective. He began his second career as a fraud management investigator for USF&G Insurance Company, and then became a fire cause and origin investigator from which he took his third and final retirement at the age of 77.
He served proudly in the Utah National Guard and the U.S. Army.
Jerry had a deep faith in the Savior and blessed the lives of his family through his constant prayers and service even when he couldn’t remember their names.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; sons: Jerry (LeAnn) and Jeff (Kasey); 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren whom he adored greatly. He is also survived by his sister, Ardonna (Mel) Allsop; brother, Kent (Bridgette) Bateman; sister-in-law, Shirley Thompson; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gordon; and nephew, Lane.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, May 28 from 6-8 PM and Wednesday, May 29 from 9:30 – 10:45 AM. A brief memorial service will follow at 11 AM at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary, 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Interment will follow at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery with military honors by the Utah National Guard and an honor guard by the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
