“Wishing on a star, catching moonbeams in a jar,
watching over us from afar, that’s our Nana”
Genevra (Jeri to most who knew her) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 29, 1924 to Lee Hopkins and Dora Bell. She grew up during the Great Depression and graduated from West High in 1941. She married her first husband that same year, Melvin Marlowe, and had three beautiful children with him, Daniel, Dianna, and Timothy. Jeri and Melvin divorced in 1952. In 1956, while attending and working at the University of Utah, Jeri met and married
Robert Cohenour (Bob), a WW II veteran and geologist at the University. He was a loving step father to her children, and a wonderful grandfather to succeeding generations. Jeri loved to travel, and her favorite destinations were Tahiti and Hawaii. She visited both several times with Bob over the years, renewing her wedding vows with him on Kauai in 1977. (Although I’m pretty sure she would have left him for Don Ho, given the chance.) Bob was a loving husband and companion to Jeri until his death in 1999. Jeri was a fiercely independent and strong woman, who faced and beat cancer 5 times during her life. With the arrival of her first grand children, Jeri became known as Nana, not only to her grandchildren, but to everyone they introduced her to over the years. She seemed to enjoy this title and would often introduce herself as Nana instead of by her given name. Jeri had 8 grandchildren, 4 from Daniel and his wife Anne, 2 from Dianna and her husband Richard, and 2 from Timothy, one with his first wife Jeanine and one with his second wife Carol. Succeeding generations have given her 20 great grand-children, and 2 great-great grand-children. Jeri was a loving and caring Nana to all of them until her death on May 7, 2019 at the age of 95.Service Information
