After a one year battle with cancer Gean W. Bigler passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on May 20, 2019. He was born to Roscoe and LaVerne Bigler on February 3, 1944 in Los Angeles, California. He was the first of seven children and shared his birth with his twin sister Jeannette.
Gean was musically inclined and loved to sing, dance, and play the French horn. He lettered in track in high school and eventually ran the L.A. Marathon. While young, he helped his Uncle Gean on his farm and he worked with his father raising orchids and flowers. One of his greatest joys was working in the yard.
Gean went on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Southern Mexico Mission. He learned to speak and write Spanish which he used throughout his life. He loved talking with people and sharing the gospel.
Gean joined the Navy at the end of the Vietnam Conflict and served for 3 years.
While in college a friend, Dee-Dee, introduced him to Lorraine Rodeback. On their first date he declared his love to her, but she didn’t believe him. They continued dating throughout the summer, but he hadn’t convinced her. She went back to SLC without him. He took many trips from California to Utah to court her, and she finally agreed to marry him. They were the first to have a double wedding in the SLC Temple on March 18, 1968.
Gean worked as a pressman for the LA Times for 30 years. He also had many hobbies. He painted pictures and windows during the holidays; fixed and collected clocks; went 4-square dancing; gardened; did genealogy; loved cooking and creating new dishes; loved going fishing and hunting with family; made a few stained glass hangings; tried to play the bag pipes; played Santa Clause for schools, malls, and churches; participated in historical reenactments; learned to say hello in 13 languages; enjoyed wood carving and weaving.
After retirement he went on a 2nd mission with his wife in the genealogy department for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Gean knew no strangers and tried to help in any way he could. He is survived by his wife Lorraine, 7 children, 16 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren that love and miss him. The peanut butter is safe, but our hearts are heavy. If you knew him you would remember him. Love You!
We’d like to thank The Huntsman Cancer Institute and Stonehenge Rehabilitation Center for their help and service during Gean’s treatment and fight with cancer.
