Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother returned home on February 26, 2025 of complications due to heart disease. Fred’s valiant spirit and love for his family kept him fighting until the final hour.
Always a patriot and peacemaker. Honesty was his policy. An expert craftsman and multiskilled with his hands and heart. His kindness and fairness formed his personality, at work and in his home. Aggressive only when required, yet gentle and steadfast in his beliefs. He never faltered in faith or duty. Never profaning, Fred was a gentleman and those who served with him loved him for his straight-up diplomacy and example.
Fred taught his family how to savor and respect the outdoors through hunting and fishing. He loved sports and was known as Tiger Thompson on the Jordan High School football team. He was a competitor when it came to a good “wrastle” in the living room ring with his children and grandchildren. He was a faithful follower and fan of all sports BYU. His grandchildren knew him well by his bear growl, which was always followed by squeals and laughter.
Fred was born August 17, 1941 in Park City, Utah to William Joseph Thompson and Agnes Isabelle Miller. He grew up in Midvale with 3 rambunctious brothers (Gene, Robert, and John) and one sister (Rayola) who kept them all in line. Fred knew the value of hard work learning the family trade and business, Thompson & Sons Heating and Air.
Fred and Kathryn met on a blind-date, each claiming, even recently, that the other was the best kisser. Fred & Kathy were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on November 15, 1963. Their future was bright and they were blessed with 6 children: NanWyn (Chad) Muhlestien, Amy (Richard) Goodrich, Nathan (Kolette) Thompson, Jared Thompson, Haydn (Lindsay) Thompson, and Brynn (Mac) Christensen. Gramps loved his 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Fred demonstrated the love he had for this country through thirty-six years of service in the Air National Guard. Earning the rank of Chief Master Sargent, he led by example. Service in civil engineering allowed him to travel the globe from 1959-1995. He earned 2 Meritorious Service Medals while in the Guard.
Fred, known for his keen sense of direction, loved the gospel of Jesus Christ. He served faithfully and cheerfully for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His most cherished work was serving a mission for the church with Kathy on the Air Force Base in Bulloxi, Mississippi and a second service mission at the LDS Employment Center.
“Chief, you have fought a good fight, you have finished the course, we will see you again soon. Heyo!"
We would like to thank Inspiration Hospice for the amazing care they gave to Fred. A personal thanks to Camillie, Anna, and Arturo.
