Fred Niels Wall

March 2, 1931 — October 7, 2019

Frederic Niels Wall, 88 years old, passed away of natural causes on October 7, 2019, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on March 2, 1931 in Mt. Pleasant Utah to Harold and Rose Wall. After 4 tries, he finally found the love of his life and his soulmate, Pennie K. Gleed. They married on February 14, 1985. He had 4 children, Mark and Brian from his first wife Mary, David(Patti) Wall and Traci(Daryl) Bateman from his third wife Judy, and 3 grandchildren, Traci, Mija, and Micah.
Fred grew up in Mt. Pleasant, Utah and attended Wasatch Academy until the 11th Grade. He loved music and played the clarinet. As a teen he developed Type 1 diabetes and became insulin dependent for the rest of his life. When he was 17 his family moved to Salt Lake City for better medical access. He graduated from Granite Highschool. Fred was very athletic and while there he was a great tennis player. Fred was also a good skier and through his twenties, never missed a good day of fresh powder at his favorite Ski Resort, Brighton. He loved the wild outdoors and would spend many nights roughing it in the Wasatch Mountains. Fred was very talented with his hands and his favorite hobby in his younger days was designing and building from scratch, U-controlled flying model airplanes that he flew in competition. After working different jobs at Auerbach’s, Sun Photo, and Thompson’s Flying Service, he started his first career as a Mercury Outboard boat engine mechanic for Anchor Boat in Salt Lake City. It was there that he met most of his lifelong friends and developed his love of camping and boating. Because of his competitive spirit, he raced boats on the Colorado River and was a rescue boat volunteer at many boat races on Utah Lake. He loved the river, and looked forward to the Friendship Cruise on the Green River and the Colorado River with his buddies for many years. It was during these trips on the River that he earned the name ‘Fearless’. In 1960 he purchased his permanent home in Taylorsville, Utah, where he remained until early 2015. He left Anchor Boat to start his second career as a printing press operator for the Utah Department of Transportation. It was here that he met his wonderful wife Pennie. Fred had purchased land in the mountains near Duchesne, Utah and placed a mobile home on the property where he spent the weekend for many years with his kids and his best friends. Fred retired from the Utah DOT after more than 20 years. He and Pennie became active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a devout member for the rest of his life. Fred developed dementia during the last few years of his life and moved to Eagle Mountain in early 2015 where he spent his final years. Fred loved his family and placed his children and grandchildren above all. He was a happy man that never worried about anything. Fred was always the life of the party and his fun personality always made everyone laugh.
