Floyd Gilbert Maestas

Floyd Gilbert Maestas, a loving father, brother, and a true free spirit, passed away in the early hours of March 1, 2025, following a cardiac event. During his brief stay in the ICU, he remained his charming, lively self, leaving a lasting impression on his caregivers. 

Born in Durango, Colorado, and raised in Kearns, Utah, Floyd was the adventurous son of Gilbert and Frances Maestas. He spent his childhood running wild with his younger brother, Mark, creating mischief and memories. In his late teens, he met and eventually married Becky Allred, and they soon welcomed their son, Brandon Floyd Maestas. Floyd later found love again with Diane Ricks, and together, they had two more sons, Jackson Gilbert Maestas and Cooper D’Angelo Maestas. His unwavering love for his children defined him, and they cherished their time with him. 

Floyd's passion for music was sparked at an early age, fueled by late-night jam sessions with his father and uncles, where he tirelessly drummed to their beautiful Spanish and Western classics. It didn’t take long to become seduced by rock and roll, and he transformed from a drummer to a guitar virtuoso, mastering the sounds of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Pink Floyd. His bands, The Oily Boys and the Zippers, rocked the stages of Salt Lake City, captivating audiences with their energy and Floyd's magnetic presence. 

Life as a musician and a professional stagehand was filled with unforgettable moments and eclectic stories. From pushing Stevie Wonder through a packed arena in a padded equipment case to jamming with members of Cheap Trick in his living room, Floyd's adventures in the music world were legendary, adding to his vibrant personality. 

As time went on, Floyd traded in some of his rock and roll pursuits to spend more time with his many friends and loving family. Floyd loved his brother Mark, and they remained side by side, still creating mischief and always late to pretty much everything. He had an incredible bond with his nephew, Matt, and nieces, Frances, Ashley, and Melissa. He was so proud of them at every stage in their life and he held them firmly in his heart and mind until the end. 

He had many hobbies that brought him joy, and unsurprisingly, he was very good at them. He loved woodworking, painting, golfing, and building and flying model airplanes. 

Floyd later ventured into the tradeshow industry, where he hung banners and graphics for major events in Utah. He was a respected figure among his colleagues, known for his loyalty and natural ability to lead. It was here that he met Barbara Miller, who became his loving partner and companion. Their relationship was filled with laughter, adventure, and a shared love for life, whether they were attending concerts or soaring in hot air balloons. Floyd embraced Barbara's sons, James and Harley, as his own, forging deep connections with them. 

Floyd is survived by his partner, Barbara Miller (and her sons, James and Harley); his beloved sons, Brandon Maestas (Kira), Jackson Maestas (Amy), and Cooper Maestas (Ash); his brother, Mark Maestas; and his treasured nephew and nieces, Matt Maestas (Leslie, Delyla, Oliver), Frances Heaton (Tyler, Madden), Ashley Singer (Chris, Claire, Chloe), and Melissa Dick-Maestas (Pat, Savanna, Gianna). 

Floyd is preceded in death by his amazing parents, Gilbert and Frances Maestas. 

Floyd's vibrant spirit and love for life will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of loving him. 

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Memorial Redwood Mortuary, with a viewing held one hour prior from 10:00 to 10:45 AM.  A viewing will be held the evening prior, Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the mortuary, located at 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah. For those unable to attend, services will be live-streamed and can be accessed by visiting Floyd’s obituary page on the Memorial Redwood Mortuary website. 

A reception luncheon to follow, held at Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1104 W 2100 S, Salt Lake City, Utah, from 2:30 to 07:00 PM.
