Florencio Leroy Griego Jr., 74, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2017 near his home in Midvale, Utah. His last two weeks were spent with family at his bedside.
“Lencho” was born in Embudo, near Penasco, New Mexico to Florencio and Louisa Griego on August 2, 1943. He graduated from Bingham High School in 1962. He served in the United States Army Infantry, Old Ironsides, Vietnam from 1967 to 1969 where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in battle. He was honorably discharged in 1973. He was an expert rifleman with awards in marksmanship. He retired from years of service at Kennecott Utah Copper Division, Bingham Mine, as a service driver.
Lencho was a kind person. He loved talking about fishing with his dad and time with Grandma in Penasco, NM. He was a loyal, loving person and he loved visiting New Mexico where he had cousins and friends that he asked for all the time. The trips to Disneyland and Universal Studios were the highlight of his vacation for many years.
He loved his Dodge Charger and truck, Ute football games, German food, and his camera. He loved all his dogs – boxers. He always talked about the military in general, and loved to go to the base PX when he could. He looked at military pilot sunglasses and watches, but he never bought them!
He enjoyed attending church at St. Therese with his mother and supporting the “Sister’s of the Carmelite” Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary – convinced that this year he would “win” the raffle!
He is survived by his two sisters: Virginia Sato (LeRoy – deceased) and Mary Garcia (Arturo); Celina Romero (Juan) who he considered to be and loved like a sister; a large extended family which includes aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends that spanned two states, New Mexico and Utah.
Funeral Mass will be Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 11:00 am, at St. Therese Catholic Church, 7832 Allen St, Midvale, UT. A viewing will be one hour prior at the church. Interment: Memorial Redwood Cemetery. Online obituary and condolences at www.memorialutah.com
