Evelyn Gurley Gaskill was born to John E. Gurley and Charlotte Lottie Wright Gurley on November 20, 1912 in Houston, Texas. She finished high school at the age of 16 and attended Purview State College for two years, but left to teach first grade for another two years. She then moved to Kansas City, Missouri to attend three years at the general hospital and passed the state board of nursing examination in 1932.
Aunt Evelyn moved home to Texas to work as a nurse at Texacana Hospital for the next 24 years where she started accumulating her wherewithal. She then moved to Los Angeles to work in a clinic for another four years before moving to Utah where she purchased two houses in the Salt Lake Valley. She has lived with her niece Debie Brown for the past 20 years in one of the homes she had paid off in 1971.
Many people knew Aunt Evelyn as a longtime nurse at what is now known as the Westside Community Nursing Home on 900 West and 700 South, or from her job with the Elks Club, and even from when she worked at ZCMI before retiring in 1985.
After retiring she spent her time reading, sewing, watching TV, and cooking. What was her secret to living such a long life? She never ate many sweets or red meat. She loved cooking veggies, especially black-eyed peas, collards, cabbage, and beans of any kind, with fish or chicken.
She was married twice during her 106 years, ten years each time, but outlived both of her husbands. She never had any children of her own. Phillip, her only stepchild who resided in California, and her niece, Debie, organized her 100th birthday celebration.
She outlived her entire family: her parents; siblings, Pauline Gurley James, Juanita Gurley, Wyrthress Gurley, Annie Bell Gurley, Eugene Gurley, and Fred Gurley. Aunt Evelyn is survived by Debie Brown, her caregiver, and a host of family and extended family who will enjoy precious historical memories.
