Evan Warnock Christensen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 26, 2018.
He was born on July 20, 1961, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Don M and Arda Jean Warnock Christensen. His mother called him a “gift from God.” The fifth of their eight children, he enjoyed a blessed childhood surrounded by a busy, loving family. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to their permanent home on Olive Drive.
He was called to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Minneapolis, Minnesota Mission. He married his sweetheart, Sonja Ann Westbrook, who had earlier served in the same mission, in the Salt Lake Temple. They became the parents of six children: Joseph, Benjamin, Ammon, Michael, Shelly and Carissa.
Evan worked building houses, including his own house. He graduated from the University of Utah and then earned a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. He also worked in a support facility for troubled youth.
Woodworking was his passion. He built many beautiful things, including hope chests, baby cribs for his grandchildren, and recently, clocks.
A gentle giant, Evan was known for his concern for others. He understood people who needed help and willingly helped them. He was an Eagle Scout and served as a Scout leader.
The last few years of his life his health declined, and he faced each health challenge with courage, Sonja by his side. In his final few months, he especially enjoyed attending the temple with Sonja and his mother.
This “Christmas Prayer” by Robert Louis Stevenson seems appropriate, since Evan left us the day after Christmas:
May the Christmas morning make us happy
To be thy children and the Christmas
Evening bring us to our beds with
Grateful thoughts, forgiving, and
Forgiven, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
We love you, Evan.
