Eva Maria Rosplesch Hegewald

April 5, 1937 — June 14, 2018

Eva Maria Rosplesch Hegewald was born on April 5, 1937, in Berlin, Germany.  After a 5th bout with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, she passed peacefully to our Father in Heaven’s presence on June 14, 2018, in her beloved home in Holladay, Utah.  She was 81 years old.
Eva grew up in Bernburg, Germany, and graduated from high school in Halle/Saale, East Germany, with hopes of one day becoming a doctor.  In 1955, she escaped communist East Germany.  Her fiancé, Rudy, had escaped a few months before this, and she was reunited with him in Mannheim, West Germany. By a glorious miracle, Rudy and Eva were able to travel to the Swiss Temple where on December 15, 1956; they were married for time and all eternity.
In 1957, another miracle made it possible for Eva and Rudy to emigrate to the U.S. and settle in Utah, which they both firmly believed was the “promised land.” Here they raised 4 boys and one girl.
Eva’s dream of becoming a doctor had to be modified after leaving Germany. She ended up working the night shift as a medical technician at Primary Children’s Hospital for 32 years.
Eva’s life has revolved around service.  Over the course of many years, she insisted on taking in individuals from Guatemala, Cambodia, Laos, and the Navajo Nation.  She and Rudy served 3 foreign missions in Ukraine Kiev, Germany Berlin, and Germany Frankfurt.  She and Rudy also served 3 service missions at the Bishop’s Storehouse on Welfare Square.  During these years, she battled cancer. She beat cancer 4 times, always just in time to serve another mission. She counts this as another great miracle of her life.
Eva is predeceased by her son, Kevin, and by her parents.  She is survived by her husband, Rudy; her sons Mario (Paula Jo), Gordon, and Andrew (Rebecca); her daughter, Christina (Bruce); her daughter in law, Abby (Kevin); and her sister Karin Herrick.  She also has 18 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren who love their “Omi” very much.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers from Intermountain Hospice who did so much for Eva in her last days.  We also express appreciation to neighbors and her brothers and sisters of the ward family, for their countless compassionate acts offered over the last several months.
Eva will be remembered as a noble and beautiful wife; and an energetic, giving, and very loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, neighbor, and sister in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Her family will miss her, and we proclaim about her the words of Paul the Apostle:  “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” (2nd Timothy 4:7)  May we honor her memory by carrying forward her great legacy!
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 11:00 am (MST) at the Cottonwood 14th Ward LDS Chapel located at 2090 East 5165 South, Holladay, UT 84117.  There will be a Viewing at the same location on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and again from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.  She will be interred in Memorial Holladay Park, 4900 Memory Lane, Holladay, UT 84117.
