Ernest Chamberlain

April 1, 1916 — December 27, 2013

Ernest Martin Chamberlain passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Legacy House of South Jordan on December 27, 2013 at the age of 97.
He was born April 1, 1916, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Harry and Annie Chamberlain. He was married on June 28, 1937, to his sweetheart, Agnes Fay Barney, in the Salt Lake Temple. They enjoyed 71 wonderful years together. He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in accounting and worked most of his career for the Internal Revenue Service until he retired. He served in the United States Army during World War II from the beaches of Normandy to Berlin. He was a Captain in the 951st Field Artillery Battalion and was promoted to Major after the war. Dad maintained contact with members of the 951st and in his later years became very close to two of the descendants, Rebecca Kelch Mitchell and Bart McCollum. Ernest was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served in many callings and put his whole heart and soul in to everything he was asked to do. He and Fay served weekly in the temple for 30 years.
Ernest was an avid fisherman who enjoyed many outings with family and friends. He loved gardening and always had a bounteous harvest to share. He had a great sense of humor and especially liked writing and sharing clever stories. He was creative and enjoyed making games for children. He was talented and resourceful. He built the home on Kentucky Avenue in which he lived for 50 years with his wife and family.
He shared his last several years with a very special friend, Shirley Simms, whom he loved dearly. The family would like to thank Legacy Retirement Residence, Legacy House of South Jordan, and Envision Home Health and Hospice for their kindness and the care they provided for Ernest.
He is survived by son Ernest Martin (Genene) Chamberlain, Jr.; son Dennis Dean (Jerri) Chamberlain; daughter Deanna Fay (L. Charles) Grant; son Lyle Brent (Jan) Chamberlain; daughter Mary Ann (Christopher R.) Horne; brother Robert (Louise) Chamberlain; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
