Elsmer George Kern, age 99, died on June 5, 2016 in Winchester, Virginia. He was born April 19, 1917 in St. Louis, Missouri to George Gottlieb Kern and Wilhelmina Louise Bartelt. He married Wilma Smith on August 16, 1946.
Elsmer was the Missouri State Champion for the mile run in high school. He served in the Navy in WWII in the Pacific. He became a school teacher, teaching 6th grade at Morningside Elementary School for many years. He served as a Bishop in the LDS Church. He was always proud to be the first in his family to join the LDS Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Westover; his grandchildren, Michael, Fielding, Austin and Clinton Westover and Cassandra Hammer. He has 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Lester and Russell Kern. He was preceded in death by Wilma Kern; his parents, and sister, Rosalie Wilkins.
Funeral Services will be held on June 11, 2016 at 10:00 am at the LDS Chapel, 3070 Nila Way (4140 S), Holladay, UT. Viewings will be held June 10, 2016 from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S Highland Drive, Holladay, UT and 1 hour prior to the services at the church.
