Elsie Maas
West Jordan, Utah. Elsie B. Maas passed away quietly the evening of January 27, 2014 under the prayerful care of family.
Elsie was born to William and Elsie F. Hoernel of Long Island, NY on July 30, 1920. Raised alongside her older brother, Bill, they explored and played in the marsh wildlife that would later define both. Elsie enjoyed the water and the outdoors in ways she would pass on to her children.
In 1943, she married Walter W. Maas and gave him three boys whom she raised with her love for wilderness and adventure and which was expressed in the woodlands of the upper Appalachia region of the east coast during various moves resulting from Walter’s career. She would come to follow her brother’s love for arts and would combine her dry wit and eye for nature in pastels, sketchbooks and canvases.
Later she lived in Las Cruces, and Albuquerque NM and came to stay finally in West Jordan, Utah where she was visited by her surviving family, sons Frederick (Deborah) of Santa Fe; Stephen (Jacqueline) of Murray Ut; Peter (Susan) of Las Cruces, NM, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
