Elizabeth Carol Deaver Goodwin

January 22, 1949 — February 17, 2021

Elizabeth Carol Deaver Goodwin, age 72, died on February 17, 2021 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on January 22, 1949 in Kinston, North Carolina. She married Robert John Goodwin on April 17, 1975 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Liz attended Lenoir Community College in Kinston NC, Ricks College in Rexburg ID, and Brigham Young University in Provo UT with a B.A. in Elementary Education.
She was a long-term volunteer in Johnston County NC Schools in the 1980s & 1990s (including “Volunteer of the Year” award in 1992). More recently, she was long-term substitute teacher in the Granite School District and school librarian at Silver Hills Elementary in West Valley City 2010 to 2018. She loved teaching young children, particularly in reading. She was especially excited to teach her young grandson Jeremy in her home right up to the time of her hospitalization.
Liz was a life-long active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had numerous callings, including Ward Relief Society, Young Women, and Primary Presidents, Stake Cultural Arts Specialist, Stake Float Chair (float “Nauvoo Belle” won Ensign Award in 2007 Days of ’47 Parade), Seminary Teacher (Garner NC Ward Seminary and Cyprus HS Seminary in Magna UT), Temple Ordinance Worker (Jordan River Temple), and other teaching & music callings.
She began playing piano at age 8 and for Church meetings in North Carolina at age 12. She has served in many Church music capacities throughout her life, including piano and organ accompanist (many times with her husband directing), music director, choir director, and teacher.
Liz loved to cook for her family, having learned from her mother as a youth. In a healthy Southern tradition, she liked to include multiple types of cooked vegetables at dinnertime.
As an empty-nester with her husband, Liz became an avid sports fan, especially of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and the BYU and University of North Carolina basketball and football teams.
She is survived by her husband Bob; daughters Heather Frances (Dan) Deuel, Ashley Goodwin, and Samantha (Scott) Wood; grandchildren Jeremy Wood, Nate and Maddie Deuel; sisters Peggy Jean (Ronald) Pate, Joyce Ann (Gene) Bear, and Charlene (Aaron) Meadows; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces.
She is preceded in death by her parents Horace Edward and Frances Evelyn Sugg Deaver.
